We had a fine turnout November 2 for our 2002 NorCal Dance Tournament. Several of our Syllabus Events had semi-finals, one had a quarterfinal. Altogether, almost 400 people were there that day! We were very happy to welcome 8 couples from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. They flew into the Bay Area to attend our competition and present their lovely Formation Team show. We very much appreciate their participation! Our program started with two outstanding workshops. Former U.S. National Latin Finalists, Dima and Olga Sukachev, emphasized posture and timing in the International Cha Cha. Their wonderful dancing and teaching helped to improve all our Latin dancing! Bill Milner, former U.S. National Standard Finalist, then presented a class in Waltz technique. He, also, emphasized posture and timing! (Maybe they are trying to tell us something!) If you have not taken advantage of these wonderful workshops (at a bargain price!), you are really missing out.

Once again we had a highly qualified and competent judging staff. Our Chairman of Judges, Stephen Cullip, kept the day moving smoothly, while giving all our dancers the best opportunity to perform well. He was capably assisted by: Bill Milner, Mark Scolieri, Sue Swain, Olga and Dima Sukachev. Mark Sequerth, back from England, was our Scrutineer. Many of our volunteers deserve special mention: Jody Frease, Mary, Mark & Lydia Scardina, Dan Marshall, Adel Ghoneimy, Scott Sahlman, Anita, Isabella, Susan Thein and Dan all did a great job. Once again our hard working Board Members came through. Alex Chan supplied and played our fine music. Karen Andersen did her usual splendid job as M.C. Tina Moretti deserves special mention. She runs the ticket sales and did all of our awards. An enormous amount of work goes into the preparation of these awards, and we really appreciate it. Turtle Brennan organized our Team Match. This time we had 6(!) teams in a very exciting competition. Laura LaGassa is our web mistress and did registration. Karen Chow assisted throughout the day at ticket sales and volunteer coordination. Ken Greer, our newest Board member assisted in door control and in many other areas.

The day was highlighted by our "Best of the Best" Grand Championship Competition, which was won by Turtle Brennan and Julie Hayes. They danced a very beautiful and inspiring waltz. Congratulations to you both.

Our next event will be the 2003 NorCal Winter Frolic on Sunday, January 19, 2003 at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge. In an effort to control costs and keep our Admission charges low, this will be our first Sunday competition. We will plan to finish by 9:30pm to get everyone home early! We will also accept registration on the day of the event.
