2002 NorCal Spring Fling Results
We had a fine turnout May 18, 2002 for our 2002 NorCal Spring Fling, co-hosted with the Allegro Ballroom. Several of our new Syllabus Events had semi-finals. Altogether, more than 300 people were there that day! Our program started with two outstanding workshops. Roberta Sun, former U.S. National Rising Star Smooth Champion, emphasized the importance posture and body shape in American Smooth Foxtrot. Her routine gave us some new material that would be suitable for social or competitive dancing. Stephan Krauel, many time U.S. 10-dance representative in World competition, also stressed posture and timing in International Rumba. If you have not taken advantage of these wonderful workshops (at a bargain price!), you are really missing out.
Once again we had a highly qualified and competent judging staff. Our Chairman of Judges, Stephen Cullip, kept the day moving smoothly, while giving all our dancers the best opportunity to perform well. He was capably assisted by: Stephan Krauel, Bob Awford, Lisa Anice Sutphen, Gene Jennings and Roberta Sun. Mark Sequerth, back from England, was our Scrutineer. Many of our volunteers deserve special mention: Jody Frease, Mary Yang, Pat Chan, Dan Marshall, Doug Priest, Lydia Wong, Lyan Chan, Larry Chang, Teresa Chang, Tami Chiu, Deanna DZambia, Anthony Hsieh, Virginia Leon-Guerro, Den Sherman, Joe Shimizu, Fukan Yen, Lydia and Mark Scardina. Special thanks to Allegro President Ray, who worked hard all day! Our fine volunteers make our competitions possible. If you can help, please contact Lynn Sanders, our volunteer coordinator, at 408-734-0460. If I have forgotten to mention anyone, please contact me.
Once again our hard working Board Members came through. Alex Chan supplied and played our fine music. Karen Andersen did her usual splendid job as M.C. Tina Moretti deserves special mention. She runs the ticket sales and did all of our awards. An enormous amount of work goes into the preparation of these awards, and we really appreciate it. Turtle Brennan designed our new award medals. Natalie Kirilcuk again did a great job organizing our Team Match. This time we had 2 teams in a very exciting competition. Laura LaGassa is our web mistress. Karen Chow assisted throughout the day.
The day was highlighted by over $800 in scholarship awards. These went to the top three couples in the Junior and Adult A Championship Latin and Standard Divisions. Many thanks to the Allegro Ballroom which supplied one half of the funds.
Our next event will be the 2002 NorCal Dance Tournament on November 2, 2002 at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge. Details will be available in September at our website: usabda-norcal.org.
Our Competitions are exciting and growing. If you would like to be part of the action please, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Lynn Sanders, at 408-734-0460. If you have any suggestions or compliments, please contact me at: 650-591-6757.
